L.I.F.E.



This is not a story. 

This is real. 

I've pondered over it many many times but still it is somewhat unbelievable.

L.I.F.E. 

Little Indian Family of Explorers.

Anand and Punita, a lovely jolly couple in their mid thirties. Their two children, 10 years old Yash and 7 years old Dhriti, more popular as Jia in the family.

I did not know them personally until recent time when I met them. But following them started quite sometime back when I first heard about them on radio. It was accidental and it was a matter of 'right place at right time'. That day I reached office parking lot and about to turn off the car. The radio jockey was announcing that there is a couple in their studio and they are embarking into an epic journey of their dream and announced their social media contact information. Until this whole conversation was over, I could not switch off the radio for few minutes. The first thing after logging in that morning, it was the search for the web-link which I just heard in radio. It opened and it blew me off. It still does so whenever I think about it. I really can not figure out, no wait, better I say that I'm quite sure that it is an utmost daring attempt in a lifetime. The question is how did this happen. To figure that out to a certain extent, I had to patiently wait for couple of months with an adrenaline rush throughout this period.

In our office, CnT Architects ( www.cnt.co.in ), we have something called 'Katte'. It is a platform in the office which is organised once in a month and we invite people of different walks of life to share their experiences with us. When I coined this idea to Anand, he readily accepted it. And I was all set to meet them. Infact the whole office was very excited about this. We fixed 30th october 2015 as the date. I was travelling overseas around that time but made  sure that no matter what, I be present for the gathering as Anand also had already altered one of his family commitment. All fell in place and finally we met. 

Anand, Yash and Dhriti arived in the evening. Punita could not make it on that day. The whole office came out to greet them and we did a photoshoot with everybody encircling them. After settling down a bit, the sharing started. It gave a special feel to it when Anand said that this is their first public presentation after they accomplished their dream journey.

Anand used to work with Dreamworks Animation studio in Bangalore until he started establishing his own setup to seek something else in life where Punita also joined him. Yash and Dhriti go to school. Since their ancestral home is in Rajasthan, the whole family went for a road trip from Bangalore to Rajasthan and back which covered around 5000 kilometers in 2014. On the way they discussed that if this could be the warm up trip then they should do a much larger trip in sometime. When Anand was planning to leave his job, he thought of a longer road trip and candidly proposed that to the entire family over the dinner table and as a first impression, everybody agreed to it. The search began from there. Slowly Anand started realising the magnitude of the task of taking up something real big. Big, because, the trip was going to be from Bangalore to Paris by road.

Exciting. Very very thrilling. Indeed by all means. But it is a mammoth task to accomplish. Anand started working on it silently. He made several iterations to the route. Had to study the social and political status of the countries which come on the way. Carefully Anand picked up the route which seemed to be comparatively safer. Just to avoid the shortest but unsafe route through middle eastern countries, Anand had to re-route it with a longer travel path which shot up the overall distance by couple of thousand of kilometers. Finally the route was finalised and it appeared to be around 18000 kilometers cutting across 11 countries. 



So after finalising the course of journey, Anand had to look out for permits. Now here they would need visas for every individual country separately along with the car-net to drive on foreign land. The relentless persuation started to follow up with different embassies. After a couple of months' hard work, thousands of e-mail exchange, numerous phone calls, Anand could put all the permits in place. At this juncture he explained the whole idea of the journey to Punita, Yash and Dhriti. Quite naturally it was a zapping moment for all the family members. Slowly it sank in. Everybody started understanding the magnitude of the journey and the associated factors with it. Next thing was to select a suitable time. The estimated time was coming around 101 days. So getting school holidays was a challenge. Anand and Punita talked to the school authority and managed to convince them to get additional days off after the regular school holiday. So another big hurddle was crossed. And that time Anand also will be out of his regular routine job to cope with the time. Route map, permits and time frame were sorted out. 

Next question was which car to take for this journey. For various obvious reasons keeping in mind the unknown terrains and road conditions, SUV would be the best bet. Anand tried to pull in various automobile maker to provide with a SUV for the cause. But when he saw not so optimistic response, he decided to take his trusted one and half year old Fiat Linea Turbo-jet machine itself for the trip. Punita being a good driver, she also agreed to drive as much as possible. Now started the preparation for the journey. What to wear, what to eat, where to stay, what medicine to carry, what equipment to  use for navigation etc. At this point they came up with the idea of naming themselves as 'L.I.F.E.' - Little Indian Family of Explorers. So LIFE started fixing few items to their car. First was the THULE carrier on top of the car roof which would carry their clothes sufficient enough to reduce laundry work. It would carry a good amount of warm cloths as well. As the whole family is vegetarian, they would carry the car boot full of home made food which would give good support in case of need. Then they fixed a GPS Navigation equipment from Garmin in the car. This device would require coordinates to feed in to get the route map. Lots of car body stickers were designed and made for the bonnet, fenders, door walls as well as boot cover. 



Once the car was decked up then they designed their T-shirts in different colours which would be a suitable attire for the entire journey. 



Time just flew by when they finished all these preparations and the date of start of the journey arrived. LIFE were featured in Bangalore FM radio stations and national daily newspapers in many occasions. They were posting all the happenings in their website to keep everyone aware. I was completely glued to it every single day. A sense of excitement built up. 

Then the 'Day' came on 8th April 2015 and they were flagged off from Marriot Hotel Bangalore with lots of good wishes. 


The first stop was at Hyderabad where LIFE took rest for two days with lots of fun at Marriot Hyderabad. 


The next stop was at Nagpur and from there they headed towards Varanasi via Katni. 


The path continued to Nepal. 



There they camped. 


And then the first blow came as a devastating Nepal earthquake from 25 th to 29th April 2015. At that time they were just around 100 kilometres away from the quake epicentre. The white dot in the photo was there location. 



Anand had posted from this location - "After being held up for 5 days at he Zhangmu checkpoint, the Army-incharge advised us immediate evacuation from the place - 'on foot', as the roads were completely unmotorable. We were told to pack complete essentials and hike to the nearest town, from where we would further be driven to a safe spot by the army. Our vehicle keys were handed to the Army Officer and we left on foot. Its been there now since we left on the 29th. We are working with the army and other officials including help from Indian Embassy to find a way to get the vehicle back. We trust these guys with everything as they have been more than helpful, more like guardians to us, esp. the Chinese Army. Our further journey much depends in news in this regards in coming days."

And LIFE could move ahead into China safely after a halt at Kathmandu.



The beautiful terrain of this region made it a pleasurable drive.


This is the spot where Anand went nuts and spent good amount of time just in the middle of nowhere. 



The gigantic sand dunes of Dunhuang made the kids to go up all the way to the top. 



Yash playing with the local folks by the highway enroute to Kyrgizstan from Kashgar, which is the last big town west of China. 



LIFE experienced the magical change in landscape within a short span when they crossed border of China and entered into Kyrgizstan. It got lot better and scenic. The place where they camped, got changed overnight. 



What a lovely monument to visit ! Gur-E-Amir in Samarqand which has a mausoleum of a reputed ruler Amir Timur. And it is said that this monument has inspired many other great monuments including Humayun's tomb and Taj Mahal. 



Uzbekystan has a lot of natural surprises throughout the contry. 


Turkmenistan became a highlight of their trip as it changes it's appearance time to time. A live crater which is there for last 45 years - 'Darwaze or Door to Hell' is a sight to behold. 



Ashgabad city centre is somewhat amazing with its mirror polished roads. 


Iran touched LIFE with their warm hospitality. 



When they reached Turkey, they asked rhetorically - 'how a country can be so simple, clean & gorgeously beautiful at the same time'. 



Bursa was kind of a homecoming for the car as the Linea is designed and built at Bursa Fiat Manufacturing Plant and LIFE got lucky to have a tour around it. 



LIFE entered into Greece at the peak of it's economic turmoil but eventually they survived and enjoyed the entire country. 



They did lot of driving in Greece to cover many places. 



And Anand & Punita celebrated their 15th anniversary also in Greece - couldn't have been any more romantic otherwise. 



LIFE crossed the Mediterranean safely and landed up in Italy. 

As Yash was insistent on meeting Neimer, they had to divert to Spain and visit Barcelona. 



And then finally the euphoric moment came into being. 



Nobody else than LIFE can explain this moment better :

"On 22.07.2015, approximately 21.30 hours, vessel number KA53 MB 0702 with four members namely Dhriti, Yash, Punita and Anand Baid on-board their Fiat Linea TJET, reached the foothills of the majestic Eiffel Tower in Paris. 

After setting sail from Bangalore By-Road on April 8th, their journey lasted for 111 days, travelling 22780 kms in 11 countries and over 50 cities. 

Reaching the destination has always been less euphoric than the journey itself. And for the experiences the jouney entailed, we feel fortunate and blessed !

Although when we reached Paris and had no further destination to drive to, is when we realized that the journey has come to an end. We screamed, we sang - we talked - wow people fly down to Paris for a holiday and we drove down. This feels cool and weird. Haha !"

After the satisfaction of completing this 'dream drive' the entire LIFE team came back home with a warm welcome by the family members and friends. 



Ofcourse the fifth member of the LIFE team came back home after a month of shipping. 



A journey of this magnitude and courage, simply can not be captured in a small blog post. 

It needs to be felt through the stories they have earned, the memories they share and the passion they emit. 

I was fortunate enough along with my colleagues at CnT Architects to get LIFE amidst us to learn about their incredible experience. 

From deepest part of my heart, I wish LIFE many more happy and encouraging journeys like this in the time to come. This epic journey was priceless and to know more about it, will wait eagerly to see their documentation which will be out in due course of time as Anand ascertained.

A Volunteer's Account



Any art-work is attached to an enigma, which it creates by the virtue of its very presence in the domain of art lovers.

BBCh is enigmatic in it's own way and creating the certain vibe among the bicycle enthusiasts.

Year after year. Seventh year.
 
It's been almost one year since this account is refreshed. So I thought it must get an update.



 Epic Nandi Race. 19th of July 2015. The last race of the road series. Elite category podium. Enautopoulus Gonzalakis of Spain, took the microphone to speak out few words from the top of the podium, wearing the winner's medal. Any organiser would feel shaky at that moment for sure. He uttered a few words in the next few seconds. Quote, I apologize to the organisers for shouting on them at the finish line today, but I'm thankful to you for organising such events one after the other consistently, this would be my last race in Bangalore as I'm leaving India shortly, but I've enjoyed racing here thoroughly, I'll miss this way back at home, I've grown up cycling in Europe and I must say that there is no platform like BBCh which provides such organised racing events every month and I'm going to miss this, unquote.

This provides ground under the feet of the organisers. It refuels them. It gives them the energy.



BBCh being a community driven and volunteer based platform, it has it's own strength which can scale at various levels. We have started working to build a 'Legacy' behind BBCh which will eventually evolve over a long period of time and we are hopeful about it. But it is a herculean task for just four of us ( Khuram, Promise, Marghoob & myself ) at the moment as organisers. If we have a vision of making a mark in the global cycling platform then the organisation has to grow and it should get required layering which will enrich the overall experience for everyone associate with BBCh.

Last season was a time when we were concentrating on perfecting the basics of each race. At the end of the last season, we realised that we have made substantial progress on that front and it is time to move up the ladder and try something new. After lots of deliberations with the existing Cycling Teams, we came up with a strategy where the Core organising committee will execute each race in collaboration with a particular Team who takes up the responsibility. This eased out a certain amount of time for the Organisers to concentrate on the things which are unexplored and necessary for future.


This sort of a collaboration has helped in one way and showed us the weak points which needs to be strengthened in coming time to make it more effective. Each team tried to do their best to bring in something new into the event to their capabilities. We saw couple of  races got breakfast organised by the respective teams which were enjoyed thoroughly by everybody.

It is a realisation that an organisation like BBCh which is run by the self motivated volunteers, is extremely difficult to sustain that self motivation which are purely based on the volunteers' personal time, dedication and hard work. It is deliberated many times that to increase the sustainability of the volunteers, why don't we introduce an incentive system among them. That thought leads to the bigger idea of making the organisation more structured and legal. The back ground work for this is in progress and as all of us are peculiarly occupied to earn our living on a normal course, it is taking a bit longer time than expected but hopefully it would see the light of the day soon around the time of MTB series and it would be in full effect by the next season.

Apart from this, BBCh has seen few new approaches in different areas in this season.

We were thinking through the whole new branding system for BBCh and the first thing to do was to get a nice Logo which could come on everything that we do. We thought instead of doing it by ourselves why don't we ask the entire community to do that ! As we thought, we launched a Logo Design Competition. It was a mind blowing process which I thoroughly enjoyed and finally after a long process we got a lovely Logo for future BBCh and it would go through a bit of fine tuning before it comes to effect. You can see all the competition entries at this link : http://bbch.in/BBChLogoCompetition2015.htm . We have talent of every walk of life in the cycling community and it is just a tapping away. This thought was reinforced after we got a fantastic Logo which is designed by a young cyclist within the community.

And this prompted us to find out a lawyer also within the community which is really nice to work with for certain issues which we are currently working on.


BBCh has gone hitech with Drone coverage of the races which again one of it's kind in Cycling history of India and we have some plans to do a proper documentation of the events in future.


BBCh has gone on AIR through a popular city radio station 'RadioCity' which broadcasted a short interview on a prime time to spread the word among the citizens.


Transponder. It was a new word to me also. Then it pushed me to do little bit of homework about that before it sees the light of the day. Transmitter + Responder = Transponder. In short. There will be a small device called transponder which will be fitted to the bike's chain-stay and that would be synchronized with the timing device at the finish line which will give an automated timing once you cross the finish line. BBCh has seen this in effect in the last race of the road series. Even though it was a baby step with lots of hitches but this will go a long way in future.

With a very limited resources we are trying to do something meaningful which might be nice to do apart from the mundane work we do often.We take one step at a time and over time we try to hone it to the perfection. That keeps us going forward.

But we need lot of volunteers with us to take BBCh to the higher level and we are hopeful to get lots of our friends to come along and make it bigger day by day. The agenda is quite long and wide. All our hard works would be really rewarded if we can achieve all of that some day. Some day !

Volunteering in BBCh has become an art for me now and I would like to be in that enigmatic state as long as life permits !

Oh Anderson !




                                                                           Chapter 1



Urvashi. 

Last february she celebrated her 30th birthday with Arjun in a hot-air baloon in Jaisalmer. And Urvashi still remembers the Comme des Garcons' which is Arjun's favourite and they have talked about it quite a few times. When they gained the full elevation in the ballon, suddenly Urvashi's scarf flew away in the air and as it was vanishing in the desert haze, she could have a glance of the brightly lit golden fort at the horizon which used to belong to Bhatti Princes, descended from the moon God ! That day after the sun set, the desert started becoming very cold and in the mid-air the temperature was close to 2 degrees centigrade. Arjun unwrapped his muffler and put it around Urvashi's neck and gently kissed her left earlobe and the jhumka twisted and created a melody under the clear sky which blended perfectly with Comme des Garcons'. Urvashi, over Krug Clos Du Mesnil, was recalling a lecture she attended while in Shantiniketan by renowned cinematographer Soumendu Roy who had shot 'Sonar Kella' in Jaisalmer with Satyajit Ray. He had described the story of shooting with the entire crew in the desert town. Desert never changes even after decades. Urvashi was wearing a choli with a lehenga which were richly embroidered with zari and drapped around with a hand embroidered odhni with stunning colours. 

But when Arjun had met Urvashi for the first time, she was in a body hugging lycra outfit. Yes almost four years back. It was rather an encounter. At a sharp hairpin bend on the Makaibari - Shiliguru main road. This is a road which connects Shiliguri and Darjeeling through Makaibari tea estates but this is not the main access to Darjeeling from the foothill. There is another one highway which is much more gradual and goes along with the toy train track upto Ghum station, the highest railway station in India. Essentially Makaibari road is not used by the regular traffic due to its steepness and huge number of sharp hairpin bends. It is mostly used by the tea estates and Army on a daily basis. Urvashi was climbing down on her bicycle and Arjun was climbing up in his jeep. Before anything could be done, Urvashi had crashed against the upcoming Arjun's jeep. Few accidents happened without anybody's fault and this was one of that kind. Unexpected. Not so pleasant. But surprising. And perhaps most importantly, destined ! That day, when Urvashi opened her eyes after two hours of the accident, she found herself in a wooden bunglow amidst a tea estate, surrounded by a woman of her mother's age along the cot and in the room, little away from the cot, there was a sofa on which two elderly gentlemen were eagerly starring at her. Immediately one of them came to her and told her very politely that nothing to worry and she is safe and secure in the estate bunglow of Mr. Bose where she was brought in after an accident few hours back. By then a smart handsome guy had entered the room and later on she got to know that he was Arjun who had brought her there after the crash. Slowly Urvashi got the strength to get up on the bed and sit against the head-board of the cot with the support of two pillows. Arjun pulled a chair close to the cot and sat on it facing Urvashi. He told very gently that he was driving a jeep on the uphill at a hairpin bend and he had honked before taking the turn but immediately after that Urvashi came from the opposite direction and probably due to loosing the control over her bicycle, she had collided with the jeep and fell unconscious. Arjun put her in the jeep and kept the bicyle also at the rear and drove down to the estate bunglow where Mr. Bose had called their family physician immediately to give her the required treatment. Arjun was driving down to Mr. Bose's estate from Calcutta who is his father's childhood friend, to collect a special tea packet which is produced in his tea estate and specifically at this time of the year. Normally this packet of tea is delivered to Arjun's father by Mr. Bose every year at this particular time and since this time around Arjun was in Calcutta & wanted to take a break from work, thought of driving down to Makaibari and collect the tea himself. Once Urvashi could gather the thread of actions what made her to land up in this context, she asked whether she could make a phone call to her Dad in Calcutta ! Arjun dialed the number from his handheld phone and took the courage to talk to Urvashis' father to appraise him about the situation before he passed on the phone to her. Urvashi, after speaking to her father, assured him not to worry and she would let him know how she would go back to Calcutta. Mr. Bose was around all these while along with Mrs. Bose and said very calmly that since it is quite late today, she can go back tomorrow only and they will make all the arrangements and she can relax in the bunglow for the night and be their guest. 

Over the evening tea and snacks, Urvashi and Arjun were conversing to each other at the outside garden to get to know each other. Urvashi had just finished her graduation from Shantiniketan and she is a cycle enthusiast and came to Darjeeling for a short holiday along with friends and the plan was to ride in the beautiful hill station. But suddenly the weather turned out to be very cloudy and started raining heavily which caused a massive landslide on the main Darjeeling - Shiliguri highway and blocked the traffic movement indefinitely. The only option to come down from the hill was to take the Makaibari road which is really dangerous especially when it is raining. Her other friends decided to take a jeep and go down to Shiliguri along their cycles but Urvashi decided to ride the downhill and join them at Shiliguri later from there they would head back to Calcutta together. Even though Urvashi had not done any major downhill climb before, somehow she made her mind to do it this time and attempted with lot of courage. Arjun was patiently listening to her story and once she finished uptill here, he suggested to call up her friends who must be waiting for her at Shiliguri anxioysly and intimate them about the situation. After Urvashi informed her friends, they got back to their conversation. Arjun is a sculptor who has done his graduation from Benaras Hindu University two years back and then on he has been travelling different parts of the country to explore his interests. He just came back from Odissa after a camp for six months and decided to take a break for two weeks before he heads out to Delhi for a project work. He took his father's jeep and drove down to come to Makaibari and stay here for couple of days and then go back to Calcutta. Over the dinner with everybody, finally it was decided that Urvashi will not be allowed to go alone the next day and Arjun will go along with her as they need to carry her crashed cycle also. 

They have done many tours together then on. Jaisalmer was the last one before they came to Bangalore. Arjun was not into cycling but he was a fitness freak reasonably. But Urvashi had dragged him into the world of cycling and when they were staying in Delhi for almost a year, both together started randonneuring and did several brevets. By now it has become a habit for them to carry their cycles wherever they go for a longer period of time. 




                                                                           Chapter 2




Arjun have come to Bangalore to study and collaborate with the team of Archeological Survey of India which is at present doing a research work at Talakadu river bank. This is a very interesting place where close to 30 temples were lay burried under the sand bed of river Cauvery almost mid-way through to Mysore from Bangalore. Lot of  parts of those temples are being recovered and restored by ASI. Arjun has a fascination of knowing old motifs and understanding them with the relevant context and then improvise the pattern in his own work. He will be in Bangalore for nearly two months. Urvashi has specialised in digital graphic art and she gets very interesting projects all over the country. Currently she is working on a brand imaging concept of an upcoming folk band from Assam and she decided to do the project being away from the client and ofcourse she has done her homeworks before heading out to Bangalore with Arjun. They are staying with their friend Suman who incidentally happens to be a little enthusiastic about the cycling scenario in the city and hence there is a lot to enjoy together while riding. 

Urvashi keeps a tab on the All India Brevet calendar very attentively and she realised that there is an upcoming brevet of 200 kilometers on 7th June. On the dinner table, when Suman's wife Tanija was serving the shahi kofta, Urvashi asked about Anchetty route where the brevet is going to be. Suman was busy admiring the well marinated minced mutton kofta with keema paratha and did not pay much attention to Anchetty. But Urvashi is a girl who will not let go things so easily. So, Anchetty. The topic of discussion over a peg of Chivas post dinner along with some amazing sketches of Arjun from Talakadu restoration site, the terrace was just cosy enough to indulge in a late night chat. Suman has not done the route of Anchetty before but he knows that this route is kind of legendary and the handful number of people who had finished the brevet last time, are heroes among the community. So better he does not dare to attempt it. Arjun also was not so keen to do it when he heard about the killer climbs on the course. But Urvashi is always up for grabbing the challenge. Nothing worked. That night Suman, Urvashi and Arjun registered for the Anchetty brevet on 7th June 2014. Tanija as usual offered to make all the necessary arrangements for the ride including pick up & drop and food supplies for the entire day. 

Till the first control point it was an easy rolling ride. Suman, Arjun & Urvashi were riding together and they lost little time to cross the railway crossing before hitting the Tumkur road as it was bottle-necked with a thick traffic even at 6.15 in the morning. It was a good warm up to cross the Vanashankari climbs before reaching Kanakapura road. But they were maintaining a good average of 22 kmph and after crossing Nice road junction, it was a good relief of rolling mostly downward all the way upto Harohalli. At Harohalli control point they caught up with many other riders. After exchanging few words with Sohan, Gana and others, Suman suggested to have breakfast after getting into the Thalli road soon after the Harohalli bus stand. Jayaprakash and few more riders were rushing in to the lane along the bus stand to have breakfast in a favourite food joint 'vasu hotel' where almost every cyclist visit while riding on this route. Three of them started riding and once they took left diversion from Harohalli bus stand the road became very quite and traffic free. After riding for 10 minutes they saw a bunch of riders going in a peloton little ahead of them and Suman could make out that they are the leading pack of around 10 riders including Ashok T, Sandeep, Michael, Rajanikanth, Silvester, and few more. Suman wanted to catch up with them but restrained to be with Urvashi and Arjun and stopped for breakfast under a very old banyan tree at the corner of the road. Tanija had packed lots of peanut-butter sandwiches for them for the whole day. Three of them had good amount of sandwiches and then resumed the ride with a good downhill road and beautiful chirping of unknown birds. They continued a nice chatty ride and decided to go little faster to cover up the lost average speed untill the sun comes out harshly. 

Arjun was pushing it little harder to be little ahead and Suman was at his ease with 20-23 kmph and Urvashi was really enjoying the ride with her own pace. Terrain was beautiful and the road also quite interesting. In brevets, if you see some rider little ahead of you and speeding up and slowly vanishing from the sight, it feels like they have gone too far away and may be gone forward by couple of kilometers ! When Arjun was vanishing slowly and Suman could not see him any more, he thought that he is going too slow. On a reasonably gradual climb, Suman stopped in front of a compound wall of a house at the middle of the climb and thought to take a quick break and sat on a stone slab laid next to the main gate. Sipped water and glucose water and that time Urvashi was passing by. She asked whether everything is fine with Suman or not and when she learnt that all are well then she pushed off instead of stopping and Suman started after few more minutes. The cue sheet of the route is very interestingly put up. You have to keep looking for landmarks like an orange house with a blue gate, light pole with a number written on it etc. etc. While Suman stopped to fill up bottle at a road side shop, Parag and one more rider crossed him after waving their hands. This is very interesting gesture among the randonneurs - they always acknowledge other rider on the way. There was a fork junction from where Parag went straight ahead and Suman stopped there and read the cue sheet and somehow intuitively figured out that the route goes towards left and he followed that. Soon after that the first adrenaline rush started with a straight steep downhill where at the base of that there was a state border checkpost. The road started winding quite a bit by now with sudden uphills. After sometime while Suman stopped to see the cue sheet, Parag came from behind and overtook him. The road became patchy at this area with lots of pot holes and broken edges along with gravel, mud and filled up rain water. Road bike is not so good on the surface but not too bad also. At this stretch, Suman got a feeling of cramp in the right calf while climbing on a steep upslope. He immediately stopped in front of a small village school and took out his stock of salt and licked a bit. He forgot to bring chikki for the ride in hurry. Sat there for few minutes and then started to ride. At this point Chiddu caught up with Suman and they rode together till Thalli control point. Both of them were chatting and cruising nicely. 

"Where is your specs Chiddu"
"At this speed I can manage to see and figure out things well in advance so I'm not wearing my specs but while I drive then I need it"

"Look, along the road there is a cable fencing on either side"
"Yes that is to protect the villagers from elephants and these cables are electrified. But elephants are intelligent enough to break the barrier. They come in a group and bang the fence with logs and come out of that."

"You are not getting the jerk on your road bike on this rough surface!" Chiddu asked. 
"Little bit yes but kind of manageable". Suman replied. 

In sometime they reached Thalli control point. There is a shop from where each rider has to buy something and get a bill as a proof of time of reaching the control. There were lots of riders gathered almost at the same time. Urvashi reached a bit earlier and was chilling over a bottle of coke. Sohan, Archana, Gana and Suman had some honey cake from a bakery and then Chiddu and Suman started riding together without spending much time at Thalli. Urvashi said that she will come behind and catch up with them soon. Brevets always keep some surprises in store at every stage and unfolds at due time. This brevet also was not an exception and that point nobody could see whats coming on the way. 

After Thalli the road became even more empty and scenic. It was almost the middle of the day. Sun was becoming harsher but the panorama was making up for that. Chiddu stopped on a slope and realised that his front tyre is not holding air and making it difficult to ride on the uphills. Suman stayed with him while the front tube was being replaced and then Sohan, Archana, Gana and few more riders crossed them. After fixing the tyre Chiddu and Suman started riding and caught up with others. Then there was a massive climb and somehow all of them climbed it and then it followed with a steep straight downhill which was a bonus. Since Sohan had done this route before he was keeping on updating the upcoming climb or downhills. As all of them were running out of fluid they stopped in front of a shop to refill and realised that there are close to 25 kms to cover in one hour to reach the next control. They geared up. Sohan told Suman when he saw that his bike was parked under the sun -

"do not park bike without shade otherwise there is a high chance of loosing air from tyres even without a flat".

That is the beauty of riding with much experienced peers. One get to learn instantly. Then came the legendary Anchetty downhills with numerous switchbacks. The cue sheet cautioned many times about this but unless one be there physically, it is tough to understand what it means exactly. Suman was going little ahead and he was zapped totally and he was afraid to leave the brake levers and enjoy the down slopes which was earned after many hard climbs because of the sudden switchbacks. Inbetween he stopped with great difficulty to take a deep breath and to see if anybody was there at the back ! Finally the down slopes came to an end at the plane of Anchetty and still 6 kilometers to go in 15 minutes or so. Suman, Sohan, Archana and Gana pedaled hard and reached the control on time.

There at the petrol bunk ATM, after Anchetty bus stand, they found Chiddu sitting on the floor along with Arjun and few more riders who reached couple of minutes before, taking rest. After a refilling break of 15 minutes, Arjun, Suman, Archana, Sohan, Nitin and Gana started the ride towards Denkanikotta while Chiddu said that he will take it little easy to beat the heat and will start after a while.

"Is there any more climb in front or we have left them behind !" - Suman asked to Sohan.
"There are few more kilometers of climb ahead just before Denkanikotta " - Sohan replied with a tired voice.
"Please give some good news, why are you scaring !"
"Atleast we are giving you the real feedback so that you can be mentally prepared " - Sohan said little irritatingly.

They formed a single line on the left most lane of the road and kept on riding. The sun was right on top and really hot. They did not get a good place to have lunch as after Anchetty bus stand there is nothing available on this stretch. Suman could sense that this place is quite beautiful and scenic with all the surrounding forest and winding uphill road but that could not be enjoyed on a saddle with so much of heat and exhaustion. Then came the killer hairpin bends where it was nearly unbearable riding condition and all of them were taking breaks after every bend and in few occasions, Suman had to push up for a while.

Chiddu came from behind and overtook them. Sohan stopped at a point to buy some tomatoes from a villager who was carrying them in a basket and offered to Suman but he was not very interested. They kept on moving.

Slowly.

Very slowly.

While Suman was climbing an uphill, he suddenly saw a man from a distance, sitting at one edge of the road in a white colour banyan and his head is bent forward and the chin is touching the chest under a big banyan tree shadow. So Suman could not make out who it was. As he reached closer to him, he realised that, the man is none other than Chiddu who had left his bike on the dust, removed his jersey and sitting on the tar just to catch up a breathe. Suman also did not waste a second, left his bike against the huge tree trunk and lied down on the road facing up the tree branches and Chiddu also did the same thing exactly in a mirrored position. Sohan and Gana were standing next to them and keeping eyes on any speeding vehicle otherwise this could have been dangerous.

After a while, all of them got up and started riding. Little ahead Gana got a flat to fix and then Sohan again offered the tomatoes to Suman and this time he took it and had it with a pinch of salt and it felt awesome. With small chit-chats they slowly reached Denkanikotta where they had stopped for refilling bottles.

While sipping a cold drink, Suman asked Arjun about Urvashi. Arjun said that don't worry about her and she is quite experienced and would manage on her own and in a ride like this, normally they don't call each other and both of them ride independently.

Then Chiddu and Arjun went ahead and the others were riding little behind. Suman thought that after Denkanikotta, the road will be flattish and they will go faster but it was quite rolling a terrain and not so easy to ride with a tired body at all.

Suman and Archana stopped to refill bottles along a road side shop while Sohan and Gana came and joined them.

"Is there any hope" - Suman asked Sohan.
"Not really" - Sohan said with a very depressed voice and added, "this is going to be my first DNF in a short distance brevet"
"Mine will be third or fourth" - Gana said.
Suman chuckled and said - "I have many like that"

Archana was riding superbly and was always ahead of this pack. The situation was to cover almost 35 kilometers in one and half hours. Which was not a big deal to cover but after Anchetty and Denkanikotta climbs, that looked like a big task.

Sun was setting down at the horizon slowly.

Suman got a sudden kick in his mind at this point of time. He felt that the entire day's hard work and good climbing would go waste if he does not make it to the end control where Tanija will be waiting anxiously.

Suman asked Gana - "How far is the TVS factory from here"
Gana looked at the cue sheet and said "Around 4 kilometers"

Suman knew that from TVS factory to Attibele junction would be around 4 kilometers. He closed his eyes for a while.

There was a fire in his mind.

He looked at the Garmin.

6:55.

He thought for a moment and decided to give a last thrust.

He breaks away from the group - just like how a bullet goes out of the barrel after firing a gun.

Gained a speed of average 30 kmph. Becoming dark. He was approaching TVS with a heavy traffic flow.

But that could not reduce his speed.

He was sneaking out through the slow traffic like how sand comes out through the gap of the fingers if you try to hold them tight.

Crossed TVS gate with lots of dodging through those security barriers. He kept on sprinting on the narrow road with heavy traffic flow.

Head lamp went on. Tail lamp went on.

30 kmph.

He hit a series of road humps at that speed and one of his bottle flew away in the air from the bottle cage and the other one was nearly empty. He did not bother to stop and pick it up.

Every second was valuable like gold.

Come on a randonneur. This is the time of glory. This pain is all about why a randonneur gives his all energy for.

Suman knew that reaching Attebele junction would be great relief as after that he can ride without traffic.

Move.

Move.

Move.

Fast.

Faster.

Even faster.

As much as you can.

Go. Go. Go.

Suman reaches Attebele junction and takes the left turn towards Bangalore at 7.15 pm.

End control closes at Silk Board circle at 7.30 pm.

15 minutes to cover nearly 20 kilometers.

Suman felt extremely thirsty. But he did not have a single drop of water to drink and he did not feel to stop also. He kept on pedaling as fast as he can. Highway also was not leaving him without climbs. Actually they are mere rolling surface but after whole day's hard ride that also appeared not so mere rather challenging with a fatigued body. Somehow he kept on dragging but when he reached SKF factory at the turn towards Jigani just before elevated expressway toll gate, he felt that there is not a single drop of fluid left in his body  to survive. He stopped in front of a bakery.

Looked at the Garmin.

7.31 pm.

He broke down on the footpath in front of  the bakery and picked up the phone to call at end control very very reluctantly. He called Tanija.

"Where are you" - Suman asked.
"I'm at the end control, where are you" - she asked with a lot of anxiety in her voice mixed with a tons of curiosity.
Suman would have been happiest person to say that he is taking the last turn to hit the end control. But the reality was little different.
"I reached till Electronic city and it would take another 15-20 minutes for me to reach there. Who is there at the control ?"
"Anil, Promise and Kalpesh"
"Ask them whether they will qualify me if I reach in another 20 minutes or not. If yes then I'll come otherwise I'm not forwarding from here" - Suman told knowingly the answer for sure.
Tanija asked and confirmed that 'the time is up.'

Suman missed the end control by merely 20 minutes.

He felt disappointed but not regretful. He rode well today. He never thought of quitting the ride even at the most toughest climbing moment also. He felt rather good. Because he never thought that he will come this far. He went in to a temporary trans phase. You get a sense of achievement when your mind gets in to a void space after an intense involvement. Suman thought that the day is almost over with a sense of happy feeling.

But that day's story was not about to end there.




                                                                           Chapter 3



Arjun reached the end control well within time. After receiving call from Suman that he is stopping at Electronic city, Tanija and Arjun left the end control to rush back at Electronic city. They were thinking that Urvashi also must have been with Suman. But when they reached KFC at Electronic city, they found Suman alone there having some snacks, looking as usual quite tired. Arjun asked about Urvashi and Suman said that he saw her last at Thalli control and after that neither he saw her nor got in touch over phone.

"Urvashi said that she will come behind and catch up soon at Thalli control point" - Suman said. "And I thought that you are in touch with her and co-ordinating".

"We do not call each other when riding a brevet and today I just went ahead and thought since it is just a day's ride, she will not have any problem", Arjun said.

"Okay lets call her up now and find out where she has reached" - Tanija said anxiously.

Arjun tried calling her couple of times and could not get the number through.

Then one by one Suman and Tanija also tried but with the same result.

Anxiety started shadowing on their minds.

One more round of trial to reach her over phone went unanswered.

Arjun was about to freak out when Tanija made a call to the end control to enquire whether they have received any information or call from Urvashi or not. But the end control confirmed that they are totally unaware of her.

Suman was thinking to jump on to his bed after a hot water shower as soon as he reaches home but now the situation looked like quite different. They decided to trace back the route and check out if they can find her on the way. After a tough ride, Suman and Arjun were forced to get into the car and Tanija took over the driving.

A journey to uncertainty began.




                                                                           Chapter 4



They kept on trying to call her mobile but without any result. They almost lost hope to reach her over phone because it might have been out of charge or out of coverage area. Till Anekal junction the road was quite busy and they had to keep looking on the other side across the wide highway lanes. But there were no trace of Urvashi. After getting on to the Anekal - Denkanikottai road it was easier to look for as the road is not so wide and no divider in the middle. But all the effort was going in vain. They reached till Denkanikottai town and before that they stopped at many places to ask the shop keepers if they had seen her by chance. After reaching the foot-hill of Anchetty from Denkanikottai side, they became quite hopeless as it was pitch dark at around 11.30 in the night. Suman was trying hard to gather some words to console Arjun but his tired body and mind was not supporting at all. Arjun became almost silent. Only Tanija was trying to keep up the hope among all. Then they decided to comeback to Denkanikottai town and inform police so that they can help. 

Denkanikottai police station was not that active at that hour of the night. Hardly few staff in a relatively relaxed mood. After listening to the problem, one officer in charge tried to contact their forest range patroling team but could not get through. By this time, Suman and Arjun both went into a deep sleep while seating on a bench on the verandah outside. An Anchetty ride were showing up on their faces. Tanija did not disturb them and managed to get a chair where she was anxiously waiting for any information. She kept on following up with the officer there but everytime they got no news from the otherside of the communication channel. Without knowing, Tanija's eyes also got closed after sometime and she woke up with a jerk on her body. When she opened her eyes, Urvashi was standing in front of her. Smiling. Outside there was a ray of sunlight coming through the leaves and a pleasant breeze flowing through with lot of birds chirping around. End of a black night with a freshness of a good morning. Firstly both of them screamed and hugged each other and that woke Suman & Arjun up.

Arjun took couple of moments to recollect the entire sequence and then he jumped off the bench and hugged Urvashi tightly for long.

It was a deep sense of relief for all four of them to re-unite. Urvashi told very quickly - "I just came back from a different world, lets go home and we will catch up with the story".



                                                                           Chapter 5

 

Over the breakfast spread, everybody were curiously looking at Urvashi to know the whole story from her.

Urvashi said "after starting from Thalli control point, I was enjoying the beauty of nature and going quite slow. Lot of other riders just crossed me and I was stopping every now and then to take photographs and at time some videos as well. The route after Thalli became so scenic. All those climbs were revealing beautiful vistas one after the other. I studied the map of this region before the ride and realized that it is an extension of Nilgiris all the way from Ooty and it covers the Bannerghatta National Park at one side and further goes over all the way till Krishnagiri. And the forest in this part is denser and house lot of wild life. When I was riding alone, was a bit scary and imagining if there is a leopard suddenly come in front of me then how do I handle the situation."

Suman interrupted - "yes there are instances that leopard come on the main roads of that region and at times they get into the near by villages also".

 Urvashi continued - "at one valley, there was a hair-pin bend and I could not see anything on the other side of the hill. Once I took the turn, I saw a herd of elephants little below the road level near a stream. They were looking so harmonious with the nature. I just could not resist myself. Parked the bike little off the road, downward along the slope. Since there were no tree adjacent to the road, I just put the bike on the slope. I went down quite a bit closer to the stream to a point from where I can see them all but with a distance of around 100 meters or so. The stream was flowing downwards to my left and the herd was around the water. I started taking video of them and started moving towards them. I don't know what happened all of a sudden, few of the bigger elephant started coming towards me. Still I did not realize anything. And within no time they came really close to me and at that moment I realized that they are going to charge me".

"There must have been a baby elephant in the herd and the bigger ones thought that you are a threat to them" - Arjun said.

"A cold sweat ran down my spinal cord in a second. I was puzzled about what to do. Somehow gathered my senses and just got into the stream which was having transparent thin sheet of water with lots of pebbles underneath. I ran over the water and the elephants were chasing me like mad. I started moving downward across the trees as much as in a zig-zag pattern to confuse them. But they were crushing all the smaller trees to make their way. This continued for quite sometime and I was going down the valley fast through thick and thin wood. Finally came to a point where the stream became wider and formed a cascade through a height difference of about couple of meters. There was this cascade of stream in front of me and a herd of wild elephant at the back - I did not think twice. Just jumped off the first boulder which was jutting out of the water and landed on top of the next boulder which is little bit lower. Repeated the similar jumps for couple of times and I reached to the bottom level of the stream. Looked back at the other end, and they stopped at the point from where I jumped off. Felt a great relief. Now they can not come closer to me because they won't be able to jump from there. But now I can not go back in the same path also and by now I would have come down the hill quite a bit and my cycle was lying next to the road. I had only my mobile phone in my jersey pocket. I immediately picked it out. And it was still on the video capture mode. Tried to call Arjun but there was no network signal. I waited there for sometime and the elephants were still there watching me from a distance. 

I looked around for any way out but could not see anything else than wood. I looked at the mobile to see the time and realised that I have a very little time before sunset. Looked up at the sky and saw the light was becoming very mild. So I gave up the idea of going back the same way. Now to find a new path, about to escape. I stared at the elephants. For the last time. Then I moved  forward into the thick forest. Went away from the stream and continued to walk through the forest downward. The only thing was running in my mind to find some application and some people ask for the way out. Because at this time when the sun starts going down it becomes darker very very fast and that too in an unknown forest all alone without any GPS coordinates. I almost was running for my life. God knows how much I ran and how much distance I covered, finally the forest started thinning out. It was a sense of hope. I looked at the mobile but by then it ran out of charge. All the more difficult. It was quite puzzling but I kept my calm and suddenly remembered, once my father told, do not cry in the forest, instead rely on your presence of mind. I just kept my fingers crossed and rushing out of the forest as quickly as possible. Finally after a patch of downhill with lot of thorny bushes, I could see some open land in front of me. What a relief. Looked up at the sky and it was gorgeous with warm hues of setting sun telling me goodbye for the day. I would probably have another fifteen minutes of natural light. Just relied on my sense of orientation and started moving towards my right hoping the road will come somewhere there. I started feeling thirsty. A very uneasy feeling started settling in. I cannot define whether it was fear or frustration or mystery. But anyway it was adventurous. At that moment, I could see a silhouette of structure at a distance, hazily. I didn't know what it was but I fixed my gaze and started running towards it. The landscape was quite different. The thick forest behind me, a barren undulating land in front of me and a silent dusky light hovering over heavily. I was fast approaching towards my target. Lot of thoughts were crisscrossing my mind and it was very tough to stay optimistic. Somehow I pulled myself and reached my destination. Still there was little light. It was a small settlement. Two small huts and a little bigger house and no road whatsoever leading to them. I went around the small huts to reach in front of the bigger house. It had a boundary wall with wooden gate. I pushed it and entered. The house was located after a large garden area. It looked Colonial style with a small portico at the middle with a long colonnade verandah. I kept approaching towards that shouting for help, but could not find anyone. I could barely see the verandah but realised that there were a couple of photo frames hanging on the wall. My senses were telling me that somebody must be living here. But there was an unusual silence all around. It was a state of anxiety, fear, uncertainty, helplessness, desperateness, unwanted thrill of life. After sometime, one of the doors opened slowly with a sustained creek, which diverted my full attention towards one end of the verandah. A ray of light of a lantern was slowly approaching towards me. When it came quite close to me, I saw a man behind it. Wearing white dhoti and banyaan. He came and stopped in front of me. His eyes through thick spectacles tried to ask few things without words. A silence prevailed. Then he asked something in a language which I did not understand.  I told him that I am looking for help as I am lost in the forest. 

- "come, sit."
- "I was chased by elephants."
- "what were you doing in forest?"

I explained him the whole story so far and how I landed up here. I told him that I wanted to go out of this place to the main road. 

-"that sounds impossible."
-"why?"
- "this is in middle of Melagiri forest and it is filled with variety of wild denizens."
-"then what do I do now?"
-"for the night you can stay back here and early morning you can cut across the forest to reach the main road. "
-"is there electricity here?"
-"no."
-"can I make a phone call?"
-"that facility is not available."
-"who stays here?"
-"noboby apart from me."
-"whose house is this?"
-"Kenneth Anderson's."

He told me to follow him and took me to a room inside and showed me a sofa to sit on before vanishing inside. In the dim light of the lantern I could barely see the furnitures of Mahogany and large photographs with Teakwood frames all around the room. The old man returned with a glass of water and another lantern. As I sipped the water, he said,

-"you must be hungry."
-"yes, very much"
-"we have to cook. Nobody comes with prior intimation. "
-"I can help you."
-"let me arrange, we can do a bonfire outside."

I could not have asked anything more than this. Again he vanished for sometime and came back to escort me to the front garden. There were few stones to sit on. He brought some fire wood and started arranging them to put the fire on. When the fire was on, he put few vegetables for barbeque. I asked him,

-"so, Mr. Anderson doesn't stay here."
-" he is no more."
-" then?"
-"after he passed away, his son Donald, used to come once in a while."
-"from where?"
-" they lived in Bangalore. Kenneth Anderson was a great hunter. He used to come in this forest very often. He was so fond of this place that he bought this bungalow. At times, this used to be their family getaway. He used to bring everybody in his Studebaker. He used to park his car next to the road and walk down to this place. He has hunted in and around Cauvery and Chinnar rivers many times."
-"are those photographs of his huntings?"
-"yes."
-"can I see them?"

He took one lantern and showed me all the photographs around the house. Truly adventurous. I was stunned to see one photograph where Anderson was posing with his cycle. The old man explained that Kenneth Anderson used to cycle around the city often. 

Rest of the evening was awestrucking to hear all the stories of man-eater of Jwaligiri, panthers of Shulekunta, black panthers of Shivanapalli and many many more stories of hunting in and around Anchetty. 

I don't remember when and how I slept off in the garden next to the fire. I woke up to see that two policemen were talking to the old man. The police told me that they have been searching for me the whole night and they could trace my cycle at the first ray of sun in the morning. They came here guessing that I might have passed through this area as it is the closest possible habitable place from where I left my cycle. I was still in a fairytale world. Expressed my gratitude towards the old man and left with the policemen. They brought me till The police station where you guys were waiting for my news and the rest you know."

There was a silence among everybody. All were mesmerised. 

Suman broke the silence. 

-"so when I'll go for Anchetty ride next time, will try to locate this place."
-"you can but without the elephants" Urvashi chukled. 

They all laughed. A well deserved breakfast for all with a truely amazing adventurous story. 

Later in the afternoon all of them got engrossed in reading Kenneth Anderson Omnibus volume 1 & 2.

BBCH



Deepak Majipatil is smiling and saying - 'man I'm very curious to see you riding' !

17th August 2014. 

I said - 'yes I also ride and love to ride but BBCH is occupying most of my time and not able to go for ride at all for long. My last ride was Anchetty brevet on 7th June 2014'. 

Partially true. BBCH coupled with my other few commitments, held me back from riding for a while now. 

Bangalore Bicyle Championships. 

Its a big thing. Its a pride. Its pioneering. Its glamorous. Its a privilege. 

For all the participating riders, kind sponsorers, active volunteers, very agile organisers & very importantly for the entire cycling community as a whole. 

I'm quite new to this and things have gone past so fast that I did not get any time to reflect upon it. New because, BBCH started almost six years back and I'm part of this for little more than a year now. The foundation was laid by couple of visionary people from our cycling community and then on BBCH has seen many changes along the way. I'm happy to be part of that and enjoyed every bit of it. 

In 2013, just before Chokanahalli forest Dirt race, the shout out for volunteers caught my attention and this thing was so very new to me that I decided to go and check it out. So one fine saturday morning, I reached to the volunteers meet just a day before the race. To my surprise there were many people around a table, busy discussing about the race. The things they were talking sounded quite alien to me. All the terminologies, rules and regulations for the race, the preparation - everything took a while for me to digest. People were running around, co-ordinating, packing up, talking about various aspects - all together it was quite buzzing. It was kind of nice to me. So finally I got the responsibilty to transport all the materials to the race venue the next day early morning and bring them back post race. Next day everything were packed and carried to the venue and each and everything made me very curious to see how they are involved in the race. So till the end of the race and packing up, I was carefully observing every activity just to understand what is going around me as it was the first time in my life that I was experiencing a bicycle race. 

The next race also I signed up for volunteering and repeated the same procedure like the first time. And this time around I started understanding it little better and started asking questions to know more about it and that made me little more confident. By now I started seeing few known faces whom I met for the last race and a sense of belongingness started to grow. 

Next race onwards, without anybody's knowledge I became a permanent fixture of BBCH. It became a habit that every month there is a race and I'm going to be a part of that. My role did not change much but my involvement started increasing. 

Another month later, realised that there are few more guys who are also quite regular like me for every race and un-knowingly a friendship started growing among us. At that point of time, we realised that we all love that sport in common and enjoy seeing so many exciting moments during the races. None of that bunch were neither into racing nor was aspiring to be also. That made the job even more easier. 

2013 racing season was coming to an end. But for us, the volunteers, it was going to be a new beginning. 

2014. The season started a month later in february after lots of discussions and deliberations. There were shortage of volunteers and organisers. So a new set of organisers were supposed to evolve and run the show. In one meeting, we were distributing responsibilities among the handful of volunteers and I kept the same portfolio for myself - transportation. As I was not very sure about what else I could do for a race about which my knowledge is so very limited. After sometime, Khuram came up with the idea that I have to manage the day to day operation of BBCH and run the show. I do not know from which angle he saw me to be suitable for this job. And this proposal was definitely not making everybody quite comfortable for very natural & obvious reasons - I did not have 
any sort of credentials to run a bicycle race ! Yes it is very true. I hesitated. Could have backed off easily. But certain things perhaps you can not do even if you want also. So I had to agree and start a new chapter in my life. 

It was not tough but certainly not so easy also. It was a beginning of a learning curve. 

First race of the season. I just tried to follow the same thing what I've been closely observing in last few races to implement. The race was filled with sweet & sour experiences. Then I realised, it is not a copy - paste job. Running a race involves a method. An approach which is very very personalised. It might give the same or similar result at the end but there is a sea of difference in handling part of it.  

So a new search began within myself. It took quite a lot of time for me to figure out the way forward. It involved lots of discussions. In the second race of the season, few things got better but still there was not a completeness which we wanted. I went to a complete old school method. I made a chart of things which everybody needs to check and ensure that all are in place before the race. 

With a huge amount of home work, we landed up in the third race of the season. It got much better this time. But still there were snags. I wanted to eliminate all of them. By this time, we started not only realising but feel that this kind of race is carrying a huge importance for one and all related to cycling. Its not only any more running a bicycle race but creating a platform for racing in India. We started believing in that. We started living in that. We started dreaming in that. We started talking in that. Lot of conflicts happened. Lot of outburst of frustration happened. Lot of misunderstanding happened. Lot of emotional shifts happened. But we held the baton. Held it high. 

We landed up in the fourth race of the season. It went on very smoothly. We realised that our process is working well and it is catching up with the imagination.  We decided at this stage, we must stregthen up our platform and make it more robust which can withstand any situation. I started dreaming about a method where the entire support system becomes extremely slick and eventually every race can be run by a single person. Tough. Very tough. Very very tough. Especially when all of us have a full time job and we dedicate our personal time for every race. But I kept on dreaming about it. As a result, I came up with a BBCH race manual. Which can be a guide to anybody who can just refer it and run a race. Shared with few people and they also appreciated it. For few of us, it became a part of our daily life - how to run a race. 

By the time we flagged off the fifth race of the season, which saw the maximum number of participants perhaps across the country ever, the Epic Nandi race, we realised that it is not only the participating riders who are racing but each one of us are also on our toes for a race. And that is not only the race day but for a very long time before the race, during the race and after the race also. Planning, execution and wrapping up - these three stages need to be handled with equal delicateness for any race otherwise it may cause a disaster. 

For the sixth race, we could do these three stages properly and delivered a nearly satisfactory race. 

The seventh and last race of the road season were approaching to us. And due to various reasons, one by one almost all of us fell short of doing things appropriately and it was becoming a nightmare. But I was holding on to my dream and methodology and the system we created. Slickness. And trust me, it kicked in. At the right time at the right place. Promise almost single handedly executed the race. After flagging off, myself and Promise were sitting on the fence and chatting and both of us almost at the same time uttered the same phrase - 'this is going to be the most peaceful race of the season'. We never looked at our eyes. But I know for sure, Promise's eyes were a bit moist as mine. We were missing Khuram as Tanija was handling the timing at the middle. The race ended with a high note. I told myself that, my dream of having a slick system works quite well and it could be a model in future. 

We have completed an awesome BBCH Road Race Series with lots of passion and hardwork with lots of help from many friends. 

I personally have started believing that - today's volunteers are tomorrow's organisers. 

Perhaps now I can go back to riding my bicycle with a peace of mind as the entrusted job is hopefully done well and of-course say 'Hi' to Deepak Majipatil from my saddle !

Starry Starry Night



A very bright spot of light moving quite fast across right to left and inching towards another one bigger dot of light.

How can a star or something like that moves so fast ?

Probably it can !!!

Oh..... there is another one ......

Both are going almost in similar direction but little staggered !!!!!

Yesterday was rather disappointing. I attempted KGF 300. But could not finish it. Had to drop out somewhere close to Vanyambadi. Even though I was quite confident to do Krishnagiri climb as I've done that route twice. But got cramp in my right calf. From 40 km mark it started. Did some stretching and it went off for sometime and came back again at 70 km mark and that stayed all the way. It slowed me down and making the ride extremely difficult. Could not pedal at all without break after 4-5 km. Then finally got a very crunched time to reach till Krishnagiri which made me to decide to drop out. If there was no problem in calf, probably I would have made it to the end control. Because I was not out of breath and stamina was not an issue. I faced this problem in Mysore brevet also. There it happened twice and after some stretching it did not persist and I could finish the ride.

I'm thankful to Anil who has generously helped to show few steps to build up stamina and it helped greatly.

Now I'm not able to figure out the possible reason for this cramp to occur repeatedly in most of the rides. There must be something fundamentally wrong. If I try to list down few things below, it might help to figure out.

1. Nutrition - I do not follow any particular diet in general, in the ride, try to eat at every one hour - snickers/ chikki/ bun/ cake / banana etc.

2. Hydration - try to drink a litre of fluid an hour in the ride - plain water and electoral water together.

3. Exercise - I do not exercise daily and not physically very active  in general.

4. Cleat - I have recently started using cleats and yesterday was my second ride with cleats. The first ride with cleats was fantastic and did not get any cramp in 120 km at all. Before I used to ride with normal running shoes and with that also I used to get cramp.

If you can help me out to find possible reason and way to overcome the issue then my future rides will become more enjoyable.

Though I am a doctor, let me clarify, I am not orthopaedician and hence my comments should be probably have same value as an astute patient!
If you have cramp in only one area two possibilities immediately come to mind:
1. You are overusing one group of muscles,
       either due to faulty technique ( Bike fit ? !! ) or
       to protect another injured muscle/s
2. There is outstripping of blood supply locally, due to some blood vessel block/injury etc.and the demands of that group of muscles is not being met. (unlikely scenario)

You must try and identify if even when you are not cycling, are you getting pain/discomfort on pressing certain areas of muscles.
If yes, i.e. soreness which has not gone away, you are dealing with muscles which have injury and not healing due to persisting or repetitive strain.
In that case,
See an orthopaedician/sports physiotherapist

This was the time to introspect and get things sorted out for my longer rides. Dr. Ali and Chiddu were just spot on. I looked into bike-fit and it changed the way I was riding almost completely. I was in the safe hand of my friend Naveen John and the process was so invigorating and evolving that really changed the understanding of my body basics which I was totally ignorant about. Bike-fit is a game all together. If you change little bit of set-up then it has to be re-arranged in many aspects. Like after the fit, I changed my saddle and that changed the complete adjustment of the saddle post. Then that change lead into the reach of the handle bar, and, so on. Still I'm not fully done with that but it is very interesting. After the first fit, I attempted the same KGF route again, and I did not get any cramp in my legs for the first 100 km and after that in one stretch I started going little faster than usual and immediately got a cramp on my right calf. Did not think twice. Stopped immediately. Picked up the stock of salt and licked it with a chikki and sat for 3 minutes. And, my cramp vanished like a magic. Ecstatic. Then on the way I was thinking, why I get the cramp attack on my right calf first always ! Am I injured which is not visible ! Yes. My left ankle was twisted long time back and I do not even remember when and how. But I injured it repeatedly in many occasions and the latest being toppling over a flight of staircase and twisting the same left ankle recently. I got my answer. Since I'm not confidently using my left leg's full strength, my right leg is tending to over-work and perhaps causing the cramps. However, I could not finish that brevet but that ride was very very insightful. Presently I'm treating my left ankle to stabilize it and it is helping. I guess the point of  'outstripping of blood supply locally, due to some blood vessel block/injury etc.and the demands of that group of muscles is not being met', may be unlikely scenario for the moment.

Again he asked " do you want to take a nap here ", his voice was little surprised.
 
I said calmly " no just want to stretch my body for five minutes ". 
 
Me and Silvester were on the footpath in front of Kamat Janapadaloka and by then we had finished riding 150 kms by around 4 am. When we left Mandya 'U-turn' by around 2 am, we were going at a reasonable pace and first stopped at Channapatna CCD at 3 am and decided to ride faster and reach Ramanagaram as soon as possible. Incidentally I met Silvester just the other side of the Kamat Janapadaloka on the way out at around 55 kms mark couple of hours before when I was passing by and waved to couple of guys who stopped for a break and in couple of minutes Silvester broke away from the group and caught me from behind. Then on we were riding together. My first ever ride with some one for such a long time. Was feeling so comfortable. But the start was not that comfortable for me. The morning of the brevet, I woke up with a mild fever and the whole day was in a dilemma, whether to go for it or not. Any how made it to the start point by 7 pm and that time it was pouring cats and dogs and I almost decided not to start. Most of the riders started by sharp 8 pm and it was still drizzling. I was still undecided. I told Tanija, who came to drop me, that I'll wait for some more time and if rain stops then only I'll go. Chiddu smiled and said, what happens if it rains in the middle ! True. Time to forget about all these non-sense. Pull up my rain coat. Get the bike checked by Sandeep and collect the card and say bye to Tanija and push-off. 20 meters. Stopped to check why my cyclo-comp is not working ! Jayaprakash E came from behind and asked why did I stop ! Then he smiled and said " just 200 kms no, don't worry, come we will go and come back ". 

We finally started at 8.20 pm. Jayaprakash and me riding through the thick traffic of a mad saturday evening in the city and then hit the sliding Uttarahalli stretch where we chatted and cruised along. At the Kengeri junction, there was a long traffic jam and I just went ahead thinking that Jayaprakash is just behind me and when I took the highway and went little ahead, realised that he was not there at the back. Stopped there for almost 10 minutes hoping that he will come but when he did not arrive by then, felt bad to leave him behind but pushed-off. Near Bidadi, got little bit of rain and saw couple of riders zipped passed me. This may be the most beautiful part of the Mysore road with a good amount of easy rolling which kept me going smoothly till Ramanagaram where I saw Sanath and Manoj at a bakery and immediately I stopped to catch up with them. Exchanged few words and filled water and started in couple of minutes. After Ramanagaram city, I missed them and went ahead and at Janapadaloka got Silvester. He is a fantastic rider with loads of riding experience with recently finished double SRs and 1000 k. We were chatting and riding and he was slowing down for me quite often to give me company and I felt blessed and nothing could have been better than that. We reached Mandya control at 1.20 am. 5 hours and half the distance is done. WOW. Ravindra, Khuram and Anup were really welcoming volunteers with lots of refills. Anup snatched the bottles and filled water in it so that I do not have to bend down - lovely gesture. Had a sandwich there and tried to take a quick nap but could not get any sleep. Then me and Silvester started again from there by 1.55 am.

Aaaahhhh ...... they are two different aircrafts going and incidentally their lights were looking very similar to the stars on the sky. Stars do not move that fast. But in a power nap mode in the middle of a night brevet, aeroplanes also resembles with stars.  

I said calmly " no just want to stretch my body for five minutes ".

We started in five minutes from then and had tea little ahead and continued our chatty ride.

Near Bidadi, Silvester was little ahead of me and I quickly chased him as the sun was rising at the horizon and told him " Good Morning ". 
 
He smiled.

We were riding last night together and the day is breaking. 

Refreshing.

Felt very content.

Reached Kengeri at 7 am and had a fresh butter fruit shake and started for the last leg at 7.15 am. As per Chiddu this stretch of climb is like a desert which comes after a beautiful meal to top it up and conclude. We embraced it and got on to it. Had enough time and was feeling quite relaxed and finally me and Silvester reached the end control at 8.15 am. He could have reached much earlier but slowed down for me and I'm just grateful for that.

12 hours and 210 kms done.

Yes I want a medal for this. I've opted for that.

It still has not become a habit for me to do any brevet like this. But with this ride, I was very happy with my timing, pace, stamina and lesser shortfalls.
